Attrition, Tehcnique, 8Ight reviews

Hi all!

This time around it is review time for darker music to keep things interesting. I personally listen to almost all kinds of music and say there are just two genres in music: good and bad. What keeps me interested in music are new discoveries, be it new artist or genre. That is why the blog focuses on varies styles that have been left in the shadows of other genres. Well, not hardstyle, but ebm/darkwave etc., especially now that Synapsi club is calling it quits. But without further delay, I present you reviews:

Attrition In Dark Dreams

Here is totally new artist to me. I've never come across with this unsung hero. Attrition was formed in 1980 in England by Martin Bowes. Drones and tape manipulations released under the title Death House prefigured dark ambient “isolationism” by almost 10 years, while the group’s first two proper albums — The Attrition of Reason and Smiling at the Hypogonder Club — set the tone for the style now known as darkwave.

Attrition made his mark on US college radio with a Monkey In A Bin, which was on compilation Animal Liberation. Since then, Attrition has released string of albums and has his unique blend of darkness and operatic female vocals with pounding beats. He is clearly an artist who doesn't make too easy music but very recognisable, whihch I find good thing. And now for the record itself, which is a compilation.

As said, I'm unfamiliar with Attrition's music before, so I had no idea what to expect. Somehow I found myself drawn into his dark world of shadows and hypnotic melodies. Beats are heavy, use of spoken samples is spot-on and use of operatic vocals just works perfectly creating a personal soundscapes and style in no-compromise style. That is best way I can think of describing his sound. It is heavy, uneasy in a way, but somehow hypnotic. To my ears, he has taken some elements from trance and techno (punding beats, hypnotic progression) and twisted it into darkwave mold. As for darkwave as genre, I feel like Columbus who left for India. I'm an explorer of the music and sounds.

A Girl Called Harmony is a good example of Attrition's use of operatic vocals, which are the key element of the song, which is quite simple sounding otherwise. Somehow sounds like someone reading poetry or reciting a classical story with operatic vocals thrown in the mix. It is very much of case love it or hate it, totally uncompromised music. Slow tempo supports the song well and Attrition creates this chaotic, melodic and hypnotic world where he draws you in. It has something common with Goblin, evnthough they do sound different, but some elements and atmosphere is similar. Goblin is best known for Dario Argento soundtracks.

As this compilation moves on, we get some strings thrown in and take a completely u-turn on Acid Tongue, which is techno basically. Same minimal approach and pulsating rhythm creates same atmosphere as Detroit techno.

To summarise things, In Dark Dreams in extremely varied case. It has some really heavy, uneasy tracks (chaotic, tehcnoish), but on the other hand really hypnotic, melodic ones. It is really good introduction to how varied music Attrition has made and how his no compromise approach shines through. Some songs that were released in the 80's have that typical aesthetics of that time period, mainly on sounds but also in a structure. Is this bad or good depends on listener. It is an album not for everyone, but there are really varied songs on the collection. At least to me it was very good introduction to the world of Attrition. I'd recommend to give it a try!

Here's another new artist for me Technique with album Touching The Void. Technique hails from warm country of Brazil. Synth-pop isn't the first thing that pops to my mind with Brazil (soccer, samba, drum'n'bass come first), but boy does Technique know their stuff! Sweet melodies, easy on the ear singer's voice work hand in hand. It might be bit too pop to some, but others will definetly appreciate it. I personally like it, I'm sucker for melody :) And did this album sound sweet. besides being pretty pop, it has some darker tones and melancholy thrown in the mix and that I enjoyed.

The album itself is extremely limited as physical release (only 300 pieces worldwide), but can be bought as digital release. There isn't that much new compared to other synth-pop bands, but what separates Technique from rest is their ear for melody, which is just spot-on. They know exactly what they are doing and do it well. Album as whole is constructed well and the tempo never rises over mid-tempo, but there are danceable songs too. The singer's voice isn't strongest one, but he knows his limits and works within those well. What strength the singer's voice might be lacking, he counterbalances with sensitivity.Just perfect record for listening to when wanting to take it bit easier. Highly recommended

Check out their website

Another new name for me, that caught my interest when I started to listen to the album. And now we move on to the other side of the world, over to Germany! Another synth-pop artist and this is their debut album on Scentair records, same label that released the Technique album. But that is were the similarities end. Here we have another well-crafted debut that sounds like the guys have been listening to trip-hop and Moby alongside with Depeche Mode. Sometimes the singer's voice reminds Bernard Summer's voice of New Order a bit. Good melodies once again and singer has voice that works well with the melodies and sounds. Hidden Traces is melancholic album with beautiful melodies and mournful singer backed up by soundscapes that go hand in hand perfectly. Some songs really reminded me of De/Vision, whom fan I am. These melodies and songs are bittersweet and just perfect, emotional music, that is beautiful.

If I heard this on radio, my guess would be band was from UK thanks to the melodies and the singer's good english. Of the two reviewed here, I'd say both have that pop element, but 8ight goes more melancholic and slower road compared to Technique. Don't just take my word for it, check the band out on Youtube:

Repix Interview

Hi all!

Hope you are doing well. When I started the blog it was just something created out of love for the music and I dreamed of getting interviews with big names and newcomers too as a way to push scenes forward. The blog just got started and to my surprise it kicked off much better than I ever dreamned of! The reception for interview requests is just humbling. So many people were willing to loan me their precious time to do quick interviews for this blog, and that is so gratifying. I thank you all for this! But now to the latest interview... I proudly present to you:

I had an honour of doing interview with no-one other than Repix! He has a new album coming out and I'm keen to hear it. He's best known for uptempo tracks and has collaborated for example with Dr. Peacock and has released 2 eps on Peacock records. And to top of that, he just kicked year off with number one track on Hardtunes with Dr. Peacock and Da Mouth Of Madness (BYMOA) released on Thunerdome records). His gigs also have been quite something, like Master Of Hardcore 20 Years Of Rebellion for example and BJKN vs Parturaiser. So he had quite a start for the year. Off to the interview then:

1. I heard you have an album coming up, what could you tell us about it?
Yes that is correct! I have finished it last month, It will be an album with a lot of variation, from the slower and darker hardcore, to my better known uptempo tracks. But also I wanted to bring high quality to show the rest of the world that I am ready for this scene, and that’s why I chose the name: I am Unleashed. Because this is just the beginning of something big! Regarding the tracks, you will just have to wait a little and go listen for yourself!

2. Was it much different to write an album instead of singles/eps?
There are a lot of factors that I personally wanted to put in my album, since a EP Is more like 4/5 tracks in a kind of style that fits. But with an album I work a bit different, I wanted to make more of a story from it. The build up has to be perfect, so when you listen to it, you would be in a kind of flow trough the album. Also you have to vary a lot because otherwise your album would sound to simple, boring and every track would sound similar to each other.

3. What are your main musical influences?
My main influence still is Hardcore. When I start a track, I want it to sound just like the tracks of the big names. For this album I have listened a lot to Angerfist & Nosferatu. Their quality is so huge, and the content of their tracks is PERFECT. When I’am working on the mixdown and mastering, my sounds have to be as close as possible to theirs. Of course it’s still too early to expect such quality, but I think when you want to reach for something and you work very hard for it, everything is possible. Also I listen to a lot of psy-trance/goa, that also have gave me a lot of new idea’s.

4. How did you get into hardcore and into producing/DJ’ing?
I started listening to hardcore when I was like 12 years old. I bought a Power Ranger cd, and at the last track was a track of Mental Theo & Charly Lownoise. I liked that so much, and want to know more of that music. Then I did a little research, and soon after that I was starting to listen to Angerfist, Partyraiser etc. Since then I’ve always collected hardcore music, and came to a point I just want to make a mix of all my favorite tracks of that time. So I started a radio show and used Virtual DJ to mix a tracklist of tracks that I loved. After a month or so I had like 100 people on my stream, listening to the tracks I wanted to play. So they asked “can you do more with it?“ a year later I bought CD Decks, and practiced my ass off haha! Everyday more then 3 hours, and so it started, I was asked more often to play at small clubs. 3 year after starting with nothing then PC software, I already had the opportunity to play at Defqon.1 Festival. From that point it went extremely fast: I met Steve (Dr. Peacock) and he became a great friend. He started to teach me so much important stuff. We have made a lot of tracks together, just because the chemistry between us when we work on music is perfect. So I think on the road till this point, It was a combination of hard work, getting to know the right persons and lot of luck haha!

5. What are biggest differences in scene between Netherlands and abroad in your view?
The biggest different in the country’s is the amount of party’s. Over here in the Netherlands there are a lot of parties every weekend. So the options are so big that it’s normal to go to a party whenever you want. In other country’s I noticed that the people have to wait like 3 of 4 weeks (or more) before a next party, and the fans just party hard 100% when they finally can go out. So when you have to play there the atmosphere is enormous! But still I think nothing can beat the Dutch festivals! They are just INSANE! With the lightshows, sound system, decoration. I really love it.

6. You played on all big festivals last year, which gig was the best one last year?Wow, to choose one is very hard haha! Because every time I perform at a big festival it’s something special. Every time again. But considering the total package, I would choose Masters of Hardcore & Dominator. The performance has to be perfect as there are so much people that paid so much money for a ticket and you don’t want to disappoint them. There’s also a lot of pressure on your shoulders, but at the same time, the moment your name sounds through the speakers and its time to rock it, all pressure falls of your shoulders and you just go all the way! I enjoyed it every minute, and had SO much great reactions and responses to the sets. I can’t wait what this year will bring me!

Big thank you for mr. Repix and we can't wait for the album and to see what's next in store for you.

Interview with Alexes and some party infos

Hi all!

So the blog has changed a bit. From now on, it will focus mainly on hard dance & ebm etc. Why? Because there are so many other forums and blogs dedicated for trance, house and so on, but not many for hard dance and dark synth sounds. Why create the 100th blog for same genre everybody else is blogging of, when I can focus on stuff that not that many write of.

First up Interview with Alexes a newcomer on the scene making big waves already! Translated from finnish for your enjoyment

1, You are one of the rising stars of finnish scene and making big waves on scene. You've made your own tracks, for example for the Q Base competition. What got you started?

My friend borrowed me his mp3 player that had varied selection of electronic music (in 2007) and then while browsing, I wound up on a artist called RTC (Rotterdam Terror Corps). I thought it was pretty cool music. I kept browsing forward and discovered track called ”Marlboro Man – Noisecontrollers” that woke my interest in harder electonic music, especially for hardstyle and it didn't take long when I got interested in producing my own music.

2.Why hardstyle?

Rather than just the music, but the whole communal culture around it is impressive. For me hardstyle in musical sensse everything is well-balanced and no other sound just hasn't hit me as hard as hardstyle did.

3.What are your expectations of your Fury gig?

That the atmosphere would be on the roof from the beginning. I'm looking forward to a lot of the set too since it is my biggest gig so far and from my perspective it is impressive.

4.Do djs need to also be producers to get noticed and to break into scene?

Not necessarily, but in my opinion it is most ethical solution, where you just don't ride on the other people's work. Fame and respect have difference like night and day in the scene after all, eventhough in optimal situation do go hand-in-hand.

What can we expect from you in the future and where can we catch you?

New music! Book me and see yourself.

Catch this guy at next Fury party with Wasted Penguinz! 27th of february @ Nosturi Click the pic to goto event page on Facebook

First ever interview!! With Djane J7

Hi all!

I am really proud to publish my first ever interview with no-one less than Finland's own Djane J7, who is one of the leading players in the hardstyle scene. She is known for her spot-on selection and energetic stage persona (and for the glitter headphones). So here we go!

The interview was originally done in finnish and translated to english :)

First of all big congrats for making it to Outbreak podcast with Pyschological attack, which is kicking tune. How did this happen and how did the track got started?

Thank you very much. Some time ago Outbreak announced of Facebook that he was looking for tracks by new artists for some special radioshow, that he was requested to do a mix for. I thought I'd give it a go and for my surprise I noticed last week that the track had made it in the mix! It was fantastic and it was good thing by Outbreak to create a mix of only lesser-known artists tracks.
The track itself might'e started from just ideas running through my head + the kick, which I wanted to make really low, bit coreish and ruff, that would be good to build an atmosphere on that I had in mind. The first thought was already to make it right away gloomy but melodic track where the kick follows the melody. From that the track slowly but surely started building.

One of my favourite ones is your bootleg of Conjure One's Tears From The Moon, which is just so beautiful. What inspired you to do a bootleg of that tune?

Thank you, nice to hear you like it! I liked a lot of the original vocals and the Tiesto Remix of the song, which I listened to a lot some time ago. For some reason that song came back to my mind and I thought it would work for sure as hardstyle version, so I started to work on the idea.

And the obligatory question, why hardstyle? What got you into it?

When I still was learning how to dj, I listened and played already then early hardstyle. My friends hated the genre at hand and I myself got even more excited of happy hardcore, hardcore and freeform than of hardstyle, so that was left in the shadow of those genres. Actually I even hated for a moment hardstyle. Only in 2010 I listened to the genre with ”fresh ears” and fell in love with it completely over the time.

These days you play other genres than hardstyle too and I think it is just great to see people move away from their comfort zone, if one can put it that way. Will we be hearing more hardcore sets from you in the future?

All throughout my dj-career I've been interested in combining genres, because I like a lot of different genres and to me it would be boring to stick to just one genre... Quickly spring to my mind that I've played on my gigs at least these kind of combinations: dark psytrance + hard nrg, freeform + dnb, electro house + hardstyle, dubstep + hardstyle + dnb, hardstyle + hardcore of course and so on. My intent is to in the future focus also on hardcore, and even at the moment I'm working on core productions.

What was the highlight for you in 2015?

At least one of the highlights was new and interesting thing was when I got in Toxic Sickness hardcore web radio as a resident dj. From there you get monthly a new hardcore mix by me, which is good thing also for international publicity.

What do you have in store for us next and where can we catch you?

Over the year I hope to finish new tunes and letäs see what other surprises we come up with! Next gig is 6th of February at Circus. It is the Clublife Birthday party with Brennan Heart. Other upcoming gigs are for example 27th of February Fury Presents Wasted Penguinz at Nosturi and 18th of march at Waterland Festival in Serena.

Thank you very much for the interview and support.

Don't just take my word for it, hear it yourself:

Clublife & Mindcore presents Radical Redemption & Angerfist party report & Clublife easter thursday revealed! (hardcore/hardstyle/hard trance)

Since Juha at Kehto won't cover this party, we decided that I'll be the one to tell you guys of the hardcore parties in Finland and abroad (when I make it). This time around it was Clublife and since I ain't a bit sleepy, I'll write it now, since I got big news too!

What can I say? This was truly historic event in finnish hardcore scene and it was totally rocking. The minute they opened the doors, there was already a line outside Circus. This doesn't happen too often so I really was shocked almost of this! Last time it happened in Hardstyle Festival and that was in 2014. Eventhough the line was quite long, we got all in quickly, which is a big plus, when it's freezing outside, but not inside. Far from it.

It is really good to see promoters working together and pushing the genre forward in our small country. It isn't first time Mindcore and Clublife have joined forces for maximum impact and they never fail to deliver! I've been at Mindocre parties too and they been top notch everytime and I hope to see more of Mindcore parties in the future! Both Clublife and Mindcore never fail to create epic party! If you see either organizer's party, be prepared for epic night out.

First up djs Neon and Triton. These 2 always deliver with maximum impact. Loved every minute of their set, which was just perfect way to kick the evening off. So beautiful melodies and you really could see them having good time behind the decks. They even played classic by RMB and that brought memories back from the mid nineties, when I saw them live. Was it really that long ago? Sigh, still that track (Spring) gives me goosebumps as do most of RMB singles. They just have so many memories in them. Sorry, got sidetracked a bit there. So back to business. Really melodic and energetic set, well done lads!

Next up was Zerateph who was wearing a mask and black hoodie. Now we moved to harder sounds which was logical progression and worked really well. The sound volume could've been bit higher, but good set! Sometimes a bit raw for maximum impact on me, but no complains anyhow from me, And the mask was cool! Might've been Kylo Ren mask, someone correct me if I'm wrong and seeing Star Wars everywhere. The energy lever did rise during his set and evening progressed really nicely. Running order was well-planned, eventhough Waily and Radical switched places. This is where the dancefloor started to get more audience and they showed their respect to Zerateph.

And so we come to Waily next. He really knows his art and did some scratching, which really takes skills to get it right. And he did it. Nice change of pace in the middle of set, when he started blasting hardcore and I got nothing but good things to say of his set. Waily always has energetic stage persona which is fun to watch and selection which sounds really good to my ears. At this point had to get something to drink and to sit a bit. Waily kicked the big gear on with his set. Dancefloor really rocked well and got quite crowded. We did hear his bootleg of Jukka Poika's reggae hit Silkkii, which created a wtf looks on my friends faces. Good bootleg, if you ask me! And heard Scooters Move Your Ass hardcore version, which slayed the floor. This is how you should remix or create a bootleg: respect the original but deliver something new to the track. And that version knew how to do just that. Golden oldie for new crowd.

Don't fuck with the Radical! I didn't really know what to expect from him, but boy did he nail it! One of the best sets definetly of the evening might even be no less than best one. Really balanced set of hardstyle/rawstyle and bit hardcore thrown in the end. Really well balanced and built set, no wonder he has such a loyal following. I always liked his productions and now I know why he is called One Man Army. That he truly is. He came and slayed my feet completely, blimey what a set honestly! I know I'm repeating myself here, but he put up an energetic show and has incredible stage charisma. He really gave 110% of him during his set and I'd call him Radical The Feet Slayer after that set. He really tore the roof off the Circus. As I'm writing this, my feet still ache from raving.

Raise your fist...for Angerfist! Radical slayed my feet and thanks to raising my fist, now my arm hurts too. So by this point, you can tell the party was excellent. Let me start with that I do have big respect for Angerfist. He has created his image really well with mask and a hoodie. That alone sets him apart from rest and is recognized by just seeing a record cover or any merchandise. His set logically contained a lot of his own productions and tracks from his latest album Raise & Revolt. Were there too many of his own productions is matter of opinion but for my liking yes. Voice Of Mayhem always delivers as well does Dance With The Wolves and Dortmund 05. The set was lot harder than I expected and was build around his own productions. The set worked well and blew the last remaining bits of the roof skyhigh and there was lots of fist in the air. But for me, it was bit of a disappointment, but hey, you can't nail it everytime. Might've been since I didn't get into the latest album that much, since it had some tracks that sounded fresh, but most were same old same old. In good as well as in bad way. Depends on your view. After this, feet slayed and fist raised, I had to leave since friend of mine sprained his ankle.

This was truly historic night in finnish hardcore history! Extra lightning and smoke machines really worked well and I hope to see them in the future too. Incredible party, now time to hit the hay and chill down a bit first with Parralox's electropop.

Oh yeah, the easter thursday main artists were released and this is another one history in the making!!

Yup, you DID read right! Frontliner is back! He reaally rocked at Helzinki Hardstyle Festival in 2014 and I'm really thrilled to see him again! Neophyte need no introduction, now does he? Legend, one of the grand masters of hardcore, This will be another epic party thanks to Clublife!

Place is Paino at Turku, which is easy city get from Helsinki by either train or for example by Onnibussi, which is really cheap option.
